Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 73, and Prince Charles, 71, finally tied the knot in 2005 years after their romance first became public during Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana. Diana’s tragic death in 1997 meant it was deemed inappropriate for Charles and Camilla to marry until many years later.
Charles and Camilla wed in a civil ceremony on April 9, 2005 and have now been married for 15 years.
In that time Camilla has cemented her status as a hardworking royal and grown in the British public’s esteem.
Nonetheless, Charles and Camilla’s affair still seems to impact their public image as a recent study seems to demonstrate.
Polling body YouGov’s October 2020 Royal Family favourability tracker shows Camilla splits public opinion.
The study states: “The Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, has split public opinion in the latest round of YouGov Royal Favourability tracking, with 44% viewing her positively and 43% negatively, for a net score of 1.”
In regards to future king Prince Charles, the study found his popularity had dipped in recent weeks.
The study stated: “Prince Charles, next in line to the throne, has seen a decrease in net favourability.
“The future monarch’s score has dropped 7 points from March to a score of 24, based on 59% of the population having a positive opinion of him and 35% a negative opinion.”
The YouGov poll quizzed 1626 British adults between October 2 and October 4.
Will Camilla become Queen Camilla?
According to experts at University College London (UCL) whether or not Camilla is known as Princess Consort or Queen Consort when Prince Charles becomes king is still up for debate.
The body claims that Camilla’s future title could hinge on the British public’s opinion of the royal.

At the time of their wedding in 2005 Clarence House announced Camilla would be known as “Princess Consort” on Charles’s ascension to the throne.
The decision was made to appease the British public’s sympathies towards Charles’s first wife Diana, Princess of Wales.
However, the title Camilla ultimately takes will be up to Prince Charles to decide as sovereign.
In answer to the question ‘Will Camilla become Queen Camilla?’, the UCL constitution unit website states: “Under common law the spouse of a King automatically becomes Queen.
“But there are two possible reasons why Camilla might not assume the title.
“The first is the argument that Camilla cannot become Queen because her 2005 civil marriage to Prince Charles was not valid.
“The argument runs as follows: because the Marriage Acts from 1753 have explicitly excepted royal marriages from their provisions, the only valid marriage which a member of the royal family could contract in England was a religious marriage in the Church of England.
“The Lord Chancellor in 2005 defended the validity of the Prince’s civil marriage, as did the Registrar General.
The expert body adds: “But if Camilla became Queen, it might provoke further legal challenges.
“The second possible reason is public opinion.
“In deference to public opinion, Camilla has not assumed the title Princess of Wales. Prince Charles will no doubt have regard to public opinion at the time of his accession, in deciding whether Camilla should become Queen; and he may also want to seek the advice of the government of the day.
“The fallback position is that Camilla would become Princess Consort as announced at the time of their marriage.”
