Dad gives up on UK camping trip, says it’s cheaper to go to Turkey
A dad who went on a camping trip to Weston-super-Mare has criticised the seaside resort, saying it was cheaper to fly his whole family to Turkey.
Labelling the Somerset resort town as “extortionately expensive”, the father from Birmingham said his family paid £300 less to travel more than 2,000 miles away.
The man, commenting online under the name Ritcher, said: “Cold, wet and extortionately expensive. [Second] day of a camping holiday with the children for [two] weeks.
“We’ve given up and booked an AI [all inclusive] holiday to Turkey and £300 cheaper. We fly out tomorrow!”

Weston-super-Mare on the Bristol Channel is described by the town’s official tourism informaion website Visit WsM as “the original British seaside resort”.
It boasts a two mile-long sandy beach and offers “traditional” seaside favourites, including donkey rides, fish and chip shops and amusements.
The town has also reinvented itself since Victorian times with new restaurants and attractions such as “the world’s largest” helicopter museum, according to Visit WsM.
Highlights listed on the site are the Ocean Adventurers indoor play centre, Marine Lake and Weston Woods.

Despite its many attractions, some disgruntled people have taken to Tripadvisor to criticise the town.
A reviewer posting under the name Barbra commented: “No deckchairs! Took my elderly mother so we could have a few hours relaxing on the beach. Not a deck chair in sight. All fastened securely away. Really? Seemed like you didn’t want anyone there.
“The parking machines were a nightmare. And that hideous scrap metal structure in the guise of art. Who on earth allowed that? So disappointed with the town. Shame as our hotel was 5*”.
However, other reviewers heaped praise on Weston-super-Mare with one writing: “I had not visited Weston for many years. The beach was clean and we did see the sea but there was a muddy mush before we could get to the sea that stopped us actually reaching it. A nice(ish) sandy beach that is worth the visit on a nice day.”
Another visitor commented: “Miles of good clean sand with regular safety patrols. Loads of typical beach activities. A great place for a fun day out with the kids.”
