Firefighters are tackling a blaze after an explosion at a food and wine shop.

Around 25 firefighters and four fire engines are currently at the scene in Lambeth, south London.

A small area of the shop and an adjoining part of a ten-storey building is on fire.

Fire crews rescued one woman from a first floor stairwell, while another woman escaped the building before they arrived.

Paramedics treated both women at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Authorities said around 50 residents living in properties above the shop also escaped before firefighters arrived.

London Fire Brigade was called to the scene at 3.47pm on Tuesday.

The brigade said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus encountered heavy smoke through the building stairwell as they entered to tackle the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The site is near to the South Bank, Waterloo station and tourist attractions including the London Eye.

Footage from Transport for London shows ambulances lined up at the side of the road as firefighters tackle the blaze on the other side.

Chicheley Street, the scene of the blaze and explosion, is closed in both directions.

People are being urged to avoid the area.

The fire brigade tweeted: "Firefighters rescued a woman from the first floor of the building on Chicheley Street in #Lambeth where they are tackling a fire at a food and wine shop.

"The street is closed in both directions – please avoid the area."
