The former Tory and Change UK MP lit the blue touch paper on Twitter after blaming the result of the 2016 EU referendum for the coronavirus death toll. The 64-year-old claimed there is a lack of leadership in Number 10 and called for “grown ups” to take over.

Her outburst comes in the wake of Dominic Cummings’ astonishing appearance in front of MPs on Wednesday.

The former adviser to Boris Johnson made a series of damning claims about the government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis and questioned the competence of both the Prime Minister and Health Secretary.

In a post on Twitter, Ms Soubry wrote: “#Leave won the #EU referendum, then won control of the Conservative Party & Government.

“Little wonder so many died who could have been saved.

“#Brexit has broken our country. I just want the grown ups back in charge. #Cummings #Covid19”

Ms Soubry’s intervention triggered a backlash amongst some users on the platform, while others came out in support of her comments.

In response, one user said: “You talk so much nonsense. What is wrong with you?”

A second wrote: “It was a pandemic… hindsight is wonderful… this had nothing to do with Brexit.”

A third said: “Brexit has not broken our country. What world are you living in? 5 months in and the sky has not fallen.

“Look at our vaccination programme for starters. Compare that to what it would have been under the EU.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “I’m sorry, weren’t there a series of democratic votes which it appears you lost on each occasion.”

Others resonated with the former MP, one wrote: “You are 100% right Anna.”

Another said: “That would be nice.”

A third added: “Never thought I would agree with Anna Soubry, today I do.”

Mr Cummings appeared in front of the Commons Health and Social Care, and Science and Technology Committees on Wednesday.

In his evidence, Mr Cummings claimed “tens of thousands of people died, who didn’t need to die”.

The bombshell inquiry was co-chaired by Tory MPs Jeremy Hunt and Greg Clark, and Ms Soubry has suggested her fellow Remainers should be at the heart of Government.

Mr Hunt, a former Health Secretary, narrowly lost out on the leadership to Mr Johnson in the summer of 2019.

Mr Clark previously served as Business Secretary and was replaced by Andrea Leadsom once Mr Johnson entered Number 10.

Ms Soubry tweeted: “Hunt & Clark chaired the sessions very well – former Cabinet Ministers surplus to Johnson’s requirements.

“Imagine how much better we’d have handled the pandemic if Boris Johnson had not been elected leader of the Conservative party & we still had people of their calibre in Government.”

The Prime Minister has this week defended his government’s handling of the pandemic following a barrage of attacks and has insisted “at every stage we have been governed by a determination to protect life”.
