Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that England will be going into a country-wide lockdown from Wednesday.

Hairdressers and barbers were only allowed to reopen on July 4, when Brits were able to get their lockdown locks chopped for the first time in three months.

However, the national lockdown brings closures for non-essential businesses including pubs and clothes stores.

Will hairdressers close again the national lockdown?

Unfortunately, hairdressers and barbers will have to close their doors across England for the duration of the national lockdown.

They are not classed as ‘essential’ businesses, and so are not permitted to operate until the lockdown ends on December 2.

There are 34,300 hair and beauty businesses in England, with the highest numbers in London, the South East and the North West, according to the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHFB) – all of these businesses will have close for four weeks.

They will be able to reopen in time for people to get their hair done for Christmas.

However, it is important to note that these lockdown rules only apply to England – Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales implement their own coronavirus restrictions independently.

Will mobile hairdressers be able to continue operating in England under national lockdown?

Mobile hairdressers are not allowed to operate during the four-week national lockdown.

This applies for both indoor and outdoor haircuts.

Mobile hairdressers will be allowed to continue working on December 2 – just in time for citizens to get their highlights and edges done for Christmas.

You should also note these restrictions will only apply in England, as the other parts of the UK have their own measures in place.

Northern Ireland is currently in a four-week circuit breaker lockdown, which sees closures across the hospitality sector, tighter social gathering restrictions, and a ban on wedding receptions, among other rules.

Wales is halfway through their firebreak lockdown, which lasts for a fortnight. There is a country-wide ban on mixing with other households either inside or outside, hospitality venue closures, and a ban on buying non-essential items.

Scotland is not currently in a second national lockdown, however, the country did endure a 16-day circuit breaker lockdown in October. The central belt has extra restrictions in place until November 2, including a ban on pubs selling alcohol past 6pm.
