Boris Johnson has said the country’s path out of lockdown remains on track despite the emergence of the Indian coronavirus variant, but warned ‘we’ve got to be cautious’.

The prime minister warned last week that his roadmap could be derailed if the strain proves significantly more infectious than the others in circulation.

Speaking at a vaccination centre in London today, Mr Johnson told reporters the situation is being kept ‘under very close observation’ and said ‘we’ll know a lot more in a few days’ time’.

He said: ‘We are looking at the epidemiology the whole time as it comes in and, at the moment, partly because we have built up such a wall of defences with the vaccination programme, I don’t see anything conclusive at the moment to say that we need to deviate from the road map.

‘But we’ve got to be cautious and we are keeping everything under very close observation.

‘We’ll know a lot more in a few days’ time.’
