Temperatures could top 20C (68F) in some parts of the UK this bank holiday weekend, giving a welcome break from May’s unusually cold and rainy weather.

London and central parts of England could get as high as 23C (73F) – the warmest since the end of March – as showers give way to sunshine.

Other parts of the South East, North West and Wales are forecast to see top temperatures of around 20C.

The Scottish Highlands should get between 14C and 18C (57 to 64F), while the Glasgow area is predicted to hit 19C (66F) by Sunday morning – as will Belfast.

Oli Claydon, from the Met Office, said: “Showers will start to ease and temperatures will increase over the bank holiday.

“There’ll be highs of up to 23C (73F) for central parts of England and possibly into London. There is a slow progression towards warmer and drier conditions.”

In contrast to this time last year, May 2021 has been much colder and wetter – with Wales recording 200.7mm (7.87 inches) of rain, the wettest May ever.

Dorset and Bristol have also been particularly hard-hit by downpours, while there was snow in the Lake District.

Across the UK, it has been the tenth wettest May on record, according to Met Office figures.

Despite the predicted bank holiday respite, the sunny spell could be short-lived – forecasters are warning showers and cooler weather could return for the first part of June.
