Truth behind the pic of Braverman cackling on top of Rwandan migrant centre
Criticism has continued to pile on Suella Braverman during her controversial trip to Rwanda.
After jetting off to the capital city of Kigali to drum up publicity for the scheme to deport asylum seekers, the home secretary was pictured laughing on the roof of a new migrant centre.
Tilting her head back and cackling with her mouth wide open, it looks as sinister as it sounds.
It even brings memories of Theresa May laughing like a Disney villain on steroids in the House of Commons.
The picture has since been shared far and wide, with some social media trolls even photo-shopping Ms Braverman in archive footage of Nazi concentration camps.
Those opposing her anti-immigrations policies have been some of the first to hit back at this internet trend and blast it as ‘vile’.
The politician can be seen laughing with a man and a woman standing beside her.
They are also smiling as they pose for the photo in the construction site in Kigali.
LBC radio presenter James O’Brien was one of the people who shared a cropped version of the image, posting it on Twitter.
‘Exactly 200 years after William Wilberforce founded the Anti-Slavery Society, here is Suella Braverman at a facility to which she hopes to deport trafficked victims of modern slavery,’ he wrote.
His comments come after she was again caught making a ‘tone deaf’ joke about the designs of homes in Rwanda.
Visiting properties which could be used to house the people she wants to deport, Ms Braverman said: ‘I really like your interior designer.’
Previously, the politician was condemned over telling a Holocaust survivor she will not apologise for her language to describe immigrants, and for dreaming to see a deportation flight to the African country on the front page of a newspaper.
Last night Ms Braverman said of the post: ‘I invite him to come to Rwanda before he casts aspersions on this beautiful, welcoming country.’
Mr O’Brien was also criticised for posting a cropped version of the original image, but he was not alone.
TV commentator and activist Femi Oluwale also shared the snap, adding: ‘When a tragedy happens or we start to see pictures of the obvious consequences of shoving 1000s of desperate people onto a country with far fewer resources…
‘This picture of Suella Braverman laughing like she has just skinned a Dalmatian.’
Several hours later Mr O’Brien posted the same text again but this time with an uncropped version of the photo.
Regardless, many have pointed out the bad optics of Ms Braverman laughing at a construction site where asylum seekers fleeing war-torn countries may be housed in after making perilous journeys to the UK.
Labour MP Dianne Abbott said: ‘Suella Braverman in Rwanda having a good laugh about all the asylum seekers that she is going to dump there.’
