Tory MP savages ‘anti-democratic’ Lib Dem leadership candidate in fiery Brexit clash

Leave supporter and Tory MP Gillian Keegan broke into an enraged debate with Lib-Dem MP Ed Davey on Brexit and a second referendum. Mrs Keegan argued that a second referendum would be undemocratic as the first one hadn’t yet been implemented. While Mr Davey argued that the Tory party and government had behaved like an “embarrassment” regarding the handling of Brexit.

Mr Davey said on Politics Live: “I think there is a number of Brexiteers who have changed their mind.

“If you look to people they are very worried about no deal, they are worried about what Brexit actually means now.

“Many of them actually do believe that the best thing to do is to take it back to the people.”

At this point, Mrs Keegan burst out “anti-democratic” as the PolItics Live host queried further whether Mr Davey would attempt to unify the country behind their ideology.

Mr Davey replied: “I’m not suggesting it is Liberal Democrat as there are only 12 MPs in Parliament.

“We are going to work with cross-party with Tory people, Labour MPs, SNPs and Plaid.

“It is very unusual but these are extraordinary times and it would be a short term government.

“They would have one objective, paving legislation for a referendum to caretake the economy and have that vote.”

The Tory MP then interrupted to this time louder say “It is anti-democratic.”

She continued: “It is anti-democratic because the previous referendum has not been implemented.”

The Lib-Dem leader hopeful then chimed in that Brexit had not been implemented because of the failings of the Tory government.

Seemingly frustrated Mrs Keegan erupted while pointing at the Lib Dem and said: “Because you have failed to do it.

“I have voted for Theresa May’s Brexit deal three times.

“Stephen Kinnock of the Labour party has said he will now vote for it.

“You have not accepted from the get-go.”

Mr Davey attempted to defend himself and responded: “I have never committed to voting for it, ever.

“Gillian your party was supposed to deliver it, and you failed totally.

“You have been divisive and hopeless and are an embarrassment of a government.”
