Labour brought in devolution for the regions of the UK in the late 1990s. In 1997 voters chose to create a Scottish Parliament and a National Assembly for Wales. The following year Northern Ireland devolution was set in place with the internationally recognised Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Now historian Professor Alan Sked has tweeted: “Clearly the fate of the Union is making that arch bore Gordon Brown feel relevant again.

“He claims the problem is that Boris fails to understand the devolved nations.

“The real problem is the devolution Blair and he introduced to save the Labour Party.

“It backfired spectacularly.”

One follower of Prof Sked, referring to devolution, said: “Poorly thought out.

“Only thinking it would preserve the Labour vote in Scotland and not weakened it in the rest of the UK and therefore political, hence few checks and balances or accountability to the UK Government.”

Recently Mr Brown challenged the Scottish National Party (SNP) for spreading “political nationalism” that he believes can change “from a celebration to hatred”.

Speaking last weekend to historian Dan Snow, Mr Brown was asked his position on Scottish independence, he stated: “We’ve got to show that we’re both the party of social justice.

“We have to show that the Scottish National Party are not delivering that despite all their promises.

“We are the party of solidarity.”

On the History Hit podcast, Mr Brown said: “The problem is that patriotism, which is great, can easily descend into what I call political nationalism.

“It goes from a celebration of us to hatred or resentment of others.

“There are huge problems that need to be dealt with.

“The people sense that our country is not what it used to be.

“All that feeds this idea that if you can play up your nationalism and the importance of your own country, then a lot will be solved.

“It’s not the case – you cannot solve the problems of pollution and proliferation by changing your borders.

“But it’s an easy way for politicians to weaponise people’s sense of belonging.”
