Princess Anne is “continuing [her father’s] legacy” through their shared “interests”, according to royal commentators. The Princess Royal had been awarding the Prince Philip Medal for the Royal Academy of Engineering to mark an outstanding contribution to the field. ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed the “similarities” between the late Duke of Edinburgh and his only daughter.

Ms Robinson explained: “The honour is something that is very important to Princess Anne but was also very important to her father as well.

“She’s continuing his legacy and work in the field of engineering.

“We’ve often talked about the similarities between Anne and Philip, and that extends to their interests.”

Mr Ship agreed: “Very much her father’s daughter, isn’t she?”

He continued: “One of the conversations was about how she wanted to give teachers a hug for encouraging girls in engineering.

“Showing them that engineering isn’t this sort of ‘oily rag thing’, to use Princess Anne’s words.

“It’s actually about building, it’s about technology, it’s about computers, about all the things that we do now.

“So it’s important to try and sort of dispel that myth.”

Prince Philip's 'broad interests' discussed by Princess Anne

Princess Anne was often said to be her father’s ‘favourite’ of his four children, and they were known to be particularly close.

She spoke to ITV, remembering him on what would have been his 100th birthday.

The Duke passed away in April this year.

Anne said: “We all have to move on, but it’s important to remember.

“You know it’s going to happen but you are never really ready.

“I think your life experience makes a huge impact.

“He’d seen a lot of it and across a really wide area of both work and industry and in academia.

“He probably asked more questions than he gave opinions. He was always good at that.”
