Theresa May hails ‘new beginning’ as she says being Prime Minister is ‘greatest honour’

The outgoing Prime Minister stood outside Number 10 with husband Philip stoically at her side. Mrs May, basked in glorious sunlight, used her final speech to express “sincere thanks” to her party, her civil servants and public servants across the country. She then proceeded to thank “the British people” adding that she hoped “every young girl who has seen a woman Prime Minister now knows for sure that there are no limits to what they can achieve.”

She said: “I repeat my warm congratulations to Boris on winning the Conservative leadership election.

“I wish him and the government he will lead every good fortune in the months and years ahead.

“Their successes will be our country’s successes.

“And I hope that they will be many.

“Their achievements will build on nearly a decade of Conservative government.

“During that time our economy has been restored, our public services reformed and our values defended on the world stage.

“Of course, much remains to be done.

“The immediate priority being to complete our exit from the EU in a way that works for the whole UK.

“With success in that task can come a new beginning for our country – a national renewal that can move us beyond the current impasse into the bright future the British people deserve.”

She concluded: “I’m about to leave Downing Street but I’m proud to continue as the MP for Maidenhead.

“I will continue to do all I can to serve the national interest and play my part in making our United Kingdom a great country with a great future.

“A country that truly works for everyone.”

Theresa May was given a standing ovation at the end of her final PMQs session on Wednesday afternoon by her own backbenches and some other MPs in the Commons.

She said: “Everyone one of us, wherever we sit, whatever we stand for, can take pride in that. That duty, to serve my constituency, will remain my greatest motivation.”

“The outgoing Prime Minister appeared to get emotional towards the very final stages of her speech in the Commons.”

Britain’s incoming prime minister, Boris Johnson, starts appointing his government team on Wednesday, after weeks of planning and of jockeying among Conservative hopefuls looking for top jobs in his new cabinet.

Mr Johnson, a figurehead for the campaign to leave the European Union in 2016, is expected to appoint a cabinet team “showcasing all the talents within the party that truly reflects modern Britain”, according to a source close to the new leader.

He is also expected to increase the number of women attending cabinet meetings and to appoint a record number of ethnic minority politicians, his team has said.

The appointments will offer a glimpse into Johnson’s plans for governing Britain after his “do or die” pledge to leave the EU on October 31, with or without a deal.

Boris Johnson will appoint Dominic Cummings, an architect of Britain’s campaign to leave the European Union, as a senior adviser, a source said on Wednesday, confirming a move the new leader’s team hopes will help deliver Brexit by October 31.
