During ITV’s Royal Rota, royal experts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson discussed Princess Anne’s relationship with former husband Captain Mark Phillips. Mr Ship compared the couple to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry as he noted they were the equivalent of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their generation. 

Mr Ship said: “The amount of press frenzy there was around this young couple, the Queen’s only daughter and her new fiancé/husband.

“Were they the Harry and Meghan of the day?”

Ms Robinson replied: “She does talk in the documentary about how there is undeniably more pressure on the younger royals, particularly in this social media age that they are growing up in.

“Things have changed but you look at her when she was young and going on engagements and those very first walkabouts, the attention that she had was huge.”

Mr Ship said: “I like the way her son and daughter said she would come back form an engagement and still be in her finery and put on the wellington boots and go and feed the chickens.”

Ms Robinson responded: “Yeah, any question of her slowing down, they don’t even bother to raise that with her.

“That is a real family trait.”

Last week a royal commentator stated that some of Princess Anne’s work involving the countryside may have been overshadowed by Prince Charles.  

Roya Nikkhah told ITV’s Lorraine that Princess Anne has been campaigning for the environment as long as Prince Charles has.

The programme’s host Christine Lampard and the royal expert also discussed the fact Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter is editing the Country Life magazine. 

Ms Lampard said: “She is very passionate about the countryside and protecting our rural life.

“I know she is editing the Country Life magazine, isn’t she?

“There is passion there.”

Ms Nikkhah replied: “There is passion, she is guest editor of Country Life which comes out today.

“She has written a 2,000 word leader on her vision for the future of the countryside, her campaigning views on food, waste, energy, all of this.

“She really knows her stuff, we think of the Prince of Wales as the great campaigner for the country side but Anne has been doing it for just as long.”
