The beautiful seaside village with few tourists despite being close to Edinburgh

The beautiful seaside village of Aberdour is just 18 miles from Edinburgh and is said to boast one of Scotland’s finest beaches. On the north shore of the Firth of Forth, the village is home to less than 2,000 people.

But, it attracts hundreds more drawn to its sandy shore, pubs and picturesque views. Visit Scotland describes the place as a charming seaside town, home to two beautiful beaches, a harbour, castle and golf course. Silver Sands beach is “one of the finest in Scotland”, according to the travel guide.

It overlooks the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh and The Lothians. A popular beach, it attracts watersports enthusiasts, walkers and families. Nearby Aberdour Black Sands is around the corner from the harbour.

The village’s main attraction is its castle, which was built by the Douglas family. Built in the 1100s and later extended, the castle includes a gallery, painted ceiling and walled garden.

Food wise, Tripadvisor recommends seafood restaurant Room with A View, Sands cafe and The Foresters Arms in the High Street.

For a village, Aberdour boasts a decent range of accommodation, with family-run Aberdour Hotel recommended by booking.com. Sea Hollies holiday home gets a 9.7 rating on booking.com while The Woodside Hotel Aberdour is rated “exceptional” at 9.7.

Blacksand Sea View Cottage, Seaside Luxury Escape and Bankhead Farm Cottage are further options listed on the website.
