The member they’re supporting so they can stand for the photograph is Princess Alexandra, 86, cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Also a working royal, Princess Alexandra is a president or patron of over 100 organisations that reflect her wide-ranging interests.

Furthermore, she also supported Queen Elizabeth II in her role as Head of State, attending ceremonial occasions alongside the monarch.

Following the gesture, royal fans were quick to praise Sophie and Prince Edward for their good deed.

One user wrote: “The care that Sophie and Edward are taking over Princess Alexandra.” Another said: “I just adore Sophie. She is just pure class, kindness, and elegance.”

Another added: “What a splendid photo. I love zooming in to see all the detail on all the outfits. What a lot of hard work!

“I have no idea who the old lady is but wonderful to see she is supported by both the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Fabulous!”

The prominence of both the Duke and the Duchess of Edinburgh has grown in recent years with the duo given their most recent titles by King Charles.

Prince Edward was granted the title of Duke of Edinburgh, closely associated with Prince Philip until his death in 2021, earlier this year.

In a statement, the Palace said: “The title will be held for HRH’s lifetime. The dukedom was last created for Prince Philip in 1947, upon his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, who held the title of Duchess of Edinburgh before acceding to the throne in 1952.

“The new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are proud to continue Prince Philip’s legacy of promoting opportunities for young people of all backgrounds to reach their full potential.”

In the months since they were granted their titles, Prince Edward and Sophie have continued making appearances as working royals, including during the Coronation celebrations.

Over the weekend, they visited a street lunch in Surrey, one of 1,000 street parties and lunches held to mark the crowning of Britain’s latest monarch.

The pair visited one Coronation Big Lunch in Cranleigh where the coronation got a taste of coronation chicken pie.

A resident of the street, Carol Scott, told the BBC: “We’re known for our street parties here on Fry Crescent, but we usually barbeque or bake the food we serve, so creating a menu made up entirely of food rustled up in our new Tefal air fryers has been a challenge which we’ve all relished.”

The coronation sparked a wave of culinary creativity following in the wake of the controversial Coronation quiche.
