Shock claim Princess Diana was ‘intrusion’ into Charles and Camilla’s romance revealed
Mr Morgan, who wrote all three seasons, said: “The assumptions were that he met and fell in love with Diana and that Camilla appeared later. “But Diana was the intrusion on a pre-existing romance and so we set that up within this season.” The Crown creator, who did extensive research before crafting the hit Netflix show, touched on this dynamic in Season 3.
Charles and Camilla had initially dated back in the early Seventies, but the Royal Family did not consider her to be an appropriate wife to the future King.
Charles eventually went away to serve in the Royal Navy and Camilla married someone else – Andrew Parker Bowles – in 1973.
Charles was reportedly heartbroken when he heard the news.
Royal expert Penny Junor said: “He fired off anguished letters to his nearest and dearest.
“It seemed to him particularly ‘cruel’, he wrote in one letter, that after ‘such a blissful, peaceful and mutually happy relationship’ fate had decreed that it should only last a mere six months.”
Camilla and Andrew had a huge society wedding and several Royal Family members were in attendance including the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
However, Charles remained friends with Camilla and Andrew and reportedly started having an affair with his old flame in around 1978.
Nevertheless, when he started dating Lady Diana Spencer, Camilla encouraged him to propose to her – which he did in her garden.
When he married Diana in 1981, he and Camilla ended their romantic entanglement for the second time.
Royal biographer Christopher Wilson told the Channel 5 documentary ‘Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding’ how Diana stumbled upon a gold bracelet believed to be a “farewell present” to Camilla before her wedding to Charles.
He said: “I think she was very suspicious of anything Camilla.
“She asked to see what was inside and eventually she was allowed to have her way.

For the first few years of their marriage, Charles stayed faithful to Diana but by 1986 he had begun to stray.
He would later claim that their relationship had become “irretrievably broken down”.
Diana also had an extramarital affair – with her riding instructor James Hewitt.
In 1992, it was announced that Charles and Diana were separating and in 1993 tapes were released that revealed to the public the romance between Camilla and the heir apparent.
In 1995, Camilla and Andrew divorced, and Charles and Camilla followed suit just a year later.
Sadly, Diana died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, just a year after her divorce was finalised, leaving behind two young sons – Prince William and Prince Harry.
Charles and Camilla were aware of the sensitivities around her death, but slowly started to make their relationship public.
In 1999, they were pictured together for the first time and they embarked on a slow PR campaign to win over public support.
In 2005, they finally tied the knot at Windsor Guildhall.
