Security at Coronation ‘on high alert’ as bookies predict protests

Disruptive protests at King Charles’s Coronation are predicted to be “likely” as become more daring, it is claimed. Security will likely be on “high alert” at the event in light of recent eco-protests at highly popular sports events. According to betting company, LegalSportsBooks, the odds of the celebrations being targeted are 16/1.

An environmental activist yesterday stopped the World Snooker Championships by pouring orange paint over himself and the table.

Edred Whittingham, the son of a venture capitalist, caused outrage when he climbed onto the table at the event in Sheffield.

His group, Just Stop Oil, has threatened to inflict chaos on other major events, including the FA Cup Final and Wimbledon.

Environmental activists also tried to interrupt the Grand National on the weekend. Dozens of protesters from the animal rights group Animal Rising used ladders to scale barriers around the course, trying to stop the race.

Talking about the King’s Coronation next month, a spokesperson for LegalSportsbooks said: “Security will be on high alert for the big day, but as activists become bolder in their actions the chances of them targeting King Charles’ Coronation have become more likely.

“You’d have to be extremely brave to try to interrupt the service in the Abbey, but the UK is also staging a number of major events in the coming months and organisers will now have to deal with the possibility of being used as a platform for someone to further their cause.

The company gave a list of odds for upcoming major events, including the Eurovision Song Contest, and the State Opening of Parliament.

The company provided the following odds:

  • Eurovision Song Contest 7/2

  • State opening of Parliament 5/1

  • FA Cup Final 8/1

  • Royal Ascot 9/1

  • British F1 GP 10/1

  • Rangers v Celtic semi-final 12/1

  • King’s Coronation 16/1

  • Wimbledon Mens or Ladies Final 18/1

“Later this month Celtic and Rangers meet in a Scottish Cup semi-final, and there is also the FA Cup Final in Wembley in June. Having hit the snooker and Aintree, anything is possible now.

“And with Liverpool hosting the Eurovision Song Contest next month, that’s another global stage for activists to try to spoil the party.”

Police have recently profiled the different groups which could strike at the King’s Coronation, including eco-yobs, terrorists, and anarchists.

Police have said the number of risks is unprecedented. Anti-monarchists Republic and Just Stop Oil have been put under surveillance.

Ex-head of Royal Protection Dai Davies said: “The threat is as big as it has been in 50 years,” the Mirror reported.

Mr. Davies added: “It is clear the threat to the monarchy is as big as it has been in the last 50 years – and the potential is as big because of the rise of Irish dissident groups and the increased action of anarchist campaign groups.
