Sarah Ferguson news: How Fergie ‘lost her cool’ on her first official engagement
Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, married Prince Andrew in their spectacular 1986 royal wedding. The Duke and Duchess of York had a whirlwind romance, and announced their engagement in February of that year. However, Fergie would very quickly have to get used to the demands of royal life as she got to to grips with being engaged to the Queen’s second son.
In her 1996 autobiography, “My Story”, Fergie lifted the lid on her very first royal engagement.
The Duchess wrote: “My first official engagement came in April – the Queen’s birthday,
“I was slightly panicked and moaned to Andrew, ‘What do I say, what do I do?’
“And Andrew, who was trained for this from birth, simply said, ‘You will learn.’
“And I learned! I had no idea what to do but I did it.
“Fergie thrived on challenges, everyone knew that.
“I stood on that Palace balcony – the massed faces blurred below, my spectacular almost-in-laws all around me – and I watched Diana, and I smiled very bravely and waved very gingerly.”
However, she continued: “I was wearing the famous Fergie bow in my hair and a handsome suit.
“Unfortunately the day had turned hot, which meant my hair curled up like Little Orphan Annie’s, and my fearsome sweat rings spread like lava.
“Plus I had a banana bow at the back, which emphasised my bottom – self-sabotage at its finest, there.
“Soon my inner voices lost their cool – ‘Has anyone noticed I don’t really belong here?”
