The Duchess of York insisted people have to “fight for what you believe is your truth” in an apparent nod to Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview. Her comments suggest she could back the Duke of Sussex’s plan to pen a book about his life.
Sarah made the remarks as she discussed the historical romance novel she is writing, titled Her Heart for a Compass.
The Duchess’s book tells a fictional account of the life and love story of her great-great-aunt Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.
Sarah told the Telegraph: “It has been an opportunity to tell my story of self-discovery, the chance to feel closer to my past, ancestors and stories I grew up with.
“The main message I would like readers to take away from Margaret’s story is that no matter whether you make mistakes or get it all wrong, you keep going and fight for what you believe is your truth.
“You have to lead with your heart.
“Personally, I feel more robust, authentic, confident in myself and who I am and where I’m going than ever, and that feeling is very much reflected at the end of Margaret’s journey.”
When asked directly about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell TV interview, which aired in March, she referred to her own sit-down chat with the talk show host in 1996.
Sarah said: “All I want to say on this is that Oprah helped me greatly when I went to the US and was interviewed by her.
“I’m a great supporter of Oprah and everything she does.”
The Sussexes made a string of damaging claims about the Royal Family in their explosive interview, including racism accusations.
Harry went on to make further controversial comments about his relatives in the following weeks.

And the royals are likely to be bracing for fresh revelations in his memoir, which is set to be released next year.
Harry promised the tome would be an “accurate and wholly truthful” account of his life.
He said: “I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.
“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.
“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”
Harry and Meghan quit royal duties in March 2020 in a move dubbed Megxit.
The couple are now living in a mansion in California with their two-year-old son Archie and newborn daughter Lili.
