Diana split from Prince Charles in 1992, but they did not officially divorce until 1996 after her infamous and explosive interview with Panorama. Following their separation Diana pursued a Pakistani heart surgeon called Hasnat Khan, who lived in London. The royal’s friends claim she was “madly in love” with Mr Khan during their two year relationship, which was mostly conducted away from the public eye.

The Princess of Wales allegedly loved the normality that came with dating Mr Khan and considered marrying him — but he knew that the publicity that accompanied Diana would put their relationship under immeasurable strain.

Writing for Vanity Fair in 2013, author Sarah Ellison explained how Diana’s relationship with Mr Khan came to a deeply upsetting end.

When Diana told him it was over in the summer of 1997, he had some harsh words for her.

After Diana’s death in 1997, Mr Khan told the police: “At the end of our meeting in Battersea Park, we arranged to see each other again, the following day at Kensington Palace.

“It was at that second meeting that Diana told me that it was all over between us.”

He explained: “I remember saying to her at the time, ‘You are dead,’ meaning her reputation was dead.

“I said this because I was sure that it was someone from Mohamed Al Fayed’s group and that was how I felt about anyone involved with him.”

Diana’s decision to break up with Mr Khan was surprising considering how much she appeared to be infatuated with him.

Many commentators have suggested that her relationship with Dodi Al Fayed was just to get back at Mr Khan, by showing that he was not afraid to be seen with her in public — as her previous boyfriend had been.

Mr Khan told police that he was uncomfortable about the amount of attention Diana received, as he “did not want to have to look over my shoulder all the time”.

However, during the first part of 1997, Diana had sought advice from friends and Mr Khan’s family about how they could marry and live in relative privacy away from the press.

Yet, Ms Ellison explained that by early 1997, “Hasnat had decided he couldn’t marry her and she knew it”.

The Daily Mail’s Richard Kay told the author: “He was horrified by the secret wedding plan and suddenly she saw all these pitfalls looming.”

By July, Diana had met Dodi Al Fayed when she was in St. Tropez.

During this period, Mr Khan explained: “When you know someone very well, you know when something is not right, and this is exactly how I felt when I spoke to her.

“I told her I thought something was wrong because of the way she had been acting, but she just said that because of the geography of where she was, she was having problems getting reception on her phone.”

When she returned, Mr Khan suspected she had met someone else probably with a connection to Al Fayed, although she denied it.

Rosa Monckton, Diana’s friend, told Ms Ellison that she “believes to this day that the relationship with Dodi was designed to make Hasnat jealous”.

The royal also remained in contact with Mr Khan’s family, and did not indicate they were no longer together.

Ms Ellison added: “Hasnat called Diana the night she died, but she had changed her number.”

She died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, along with Dodi Al Fayed.
