Former royal chef Darren McGrady has revealed Prince William and Prince Harry would often go on “secret trips” to McDonald’s when they were children. Mr McGrady said their late mother, Princess Diana would take the boys out of Kensington Palace to visit the fast-food chain. The former chef to the Royals said that although he would prepare burgers and fries for William and Harry, they would always prefer to take trips to the restaurant with their mother – for one reason.

Despite having access to the best chefs around, Princess Diana would regularly opt for the fast-food option with her sons – because they loved the toys.

In a Q&A on his YouTube channel, Mr McGrady said: “William and Harry loved fast food.

“They loved McDonald’s when they were small. But, I’m told it’s because of the toys and not the burgers.”

Mr McGrady told Marie Claire: “I remember the Princess came into the kitchen one day and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys I’m taking them out, we’re going to McDonald’s.

“And I said, ‘Oh my God – your Royal Highness, I can do that, I can do burgers’. And she said, ‘No, it’s the toy they want’.”

He added: “The boys loved McDonald’s, and going out for pizza, and having potato skins – sort of the American foods. They were royal princes but had children’s palates.”

Their visit became a more regular occurrence, with Princess Diana’s former butler and close friend Paul Burrell explained that it was a normal part of their Saturday night routine.

Prince Harry, Prince William and Princess Diana would often order the classic Big Mac and chips for their dinner.

Mr Burrell told the Mirror: “They would then come home and sit on a giant stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in front of the TV and watched Blind Date.

“They loved Blind Date and I’d hear them all screaming things like ‘Oh don’t pick him’.”

Princess Diana reportedly wanted to keep her sons’ upbringing as normal as possible by dong typical childhood activities.

She even took Prince William and Prince Harry to theme parks as children.

In keeping with her plan to keep things normal, she told staff she wanted to be treated like everyone else, including queuing for all the rides.

The trio went on a number of rides together, including a rollercoaster and a water slide. Prince William also recently revealed he loves a cheeky Nando’s.

Speaking on the new documentary Football, Prince William and our Mental Health, an employee at one of the restaurants asked the Prince: “You like Nando’s?”

To which Prince William replied: “I like Nando’s – everyone likes a Nando’s.”

It was also revealed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge love to kick back with a takeaway and a curry.

The Prince said: “We’re actually quite keen on box sets. We like to watch box sets… We’ve watched Homeland, we’re big fans of Homeland.

“Game of Thrones we’ve watched as well. Seems like everyone has seen it!” The Duchess of Cambridge interrupted her husband to say: “Absolutely. And curry – definitely.”

Prince William confirmed their food does not get delivered, but instead, a member of staff goes to collect it.
