Royal baby name: What is Prince Harry’s last name – what will the royal baby surname be?
Proud parents Meghan Markle, 37, and Prince Harry, 34, welcomed a royal baby boy into their world and the nation’s hearts on Monday, May 6. The first official photographs of the bundle of joy have now been shared with the world. But while the world eagerly awaits the first name for the adorable chubby-cheeked infant that all have now seen, many are bewildered as to what the baby’s surname will be.
Traditionally, royal babies do not have surnames.
But it may be that Meghan and Harry’s son takes the latter part of this parent’s title for a surname, in a similar vein to cousin Prince George.
When George started school, he had the option of taking the royal surname of Mountbatten-Windsor.
But for ease, he instead took the name George Cambridge after his parents royal titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, following in the steps of his father who was known as William Wales at school.
So it is possible the new baby will be known as Baby Sussex.
But what if new parents decide to take the traditional route and use the official royal surname.
Mountbatten-Windsor is the royal family’s official surname after Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh merged their family names almost sixty years ago.
But despite this, most royal family members have forgone the surname in lieu of giving their families different names related to their specific titles.
The couple were clearly overjoyed as they shared their delight with their new son today in Windsor.
New mum Meghan said: “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy.”
The couple, speaking in St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle and holding their two-day-old child shared how he had a lovely temperament.
Meghan said: “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm.
“He’s just been a dream, so it’s been a special couple of days.”
As they both laughed, Harry added: “I don’t know who he gets that from.”
The couple reported that they were thoroughly enjoying their first few days of parenthood.
Prince Harry said: “It’s great. Parenting is amazing. It’s only been two and a half days, three days, but we’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy.”
He added that he and Meghan were looking forward to spending some “precious times with him as he slowly, slowly starts to grow up.”
During the interview, the 34-year-old Duke gently cradled his son in his arms and could not resist sneaking a peek down at him as he apparently slept, while Meghan put her hand on the small of Harry’s back as she listened to him talk.
