Rampant foxes are causing a real headache for drivers

Drivers are having to ‘fox-proof’ their cars to stop the rampant animals chewing through brake cables and electrical wires.

Fed-up residents in Horsham, West Sussex, say they are being plagued by the destructive foxes who’ve caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage.

To add insult to injury, the foxes have also decorated the surrounding pavements with faeces and vomit.

Tarpaulins are now being attached to some cars to stop the foxes getting underneath and nibbling on the wires.

Heather Phillips said around 30 people in Spencer’s Road and other nearby streets have been left with huge mechanic bills.

Her own vehicle was damaged and a garage originally quoted her £4,500 for the repairs.

Other neighbours revealed they were facing bills of up to £9,000 each, while Ms Phillips also claims to have counted 36 foxes in just one garden.

She said the ‘nightmare’ problem has been going on for seven months but residents are not getting any help from the council.

Ms Phillips added: ‘It’s been so dreadful. There are no words to describe it. It’s a nightmare. These foxes go on frenzies. It is just hideous.

‘We have counted about 36 foxes in a neighbouring garden.’

She said children are now having to walk to school along pavements covered with fox poo and maggots feeding on their vomit.

Ms Phillips claimed council officials told residents that foxes were not vermin but classed as ‘wildlife’.

She added: ‘Nearly every person in the neighbourhood has contacted environmental health but we never hear back.

‘We phoned the RSPCA but they said they could only help if someone was harming the foxes.’

Horsham District Council has been approached for comment.
