It is no secret that the parents of royals have opted to give their children a more private life rather than having them constantly displayed to the public. There have hardly been any images of the Prince Harry’s first born, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor – as the last photo released was of his back on as he celebrated his second birthday this month. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and her husband Prince William also use their social media accounts and photography skills to show images of their children. But on every birthday Kate ensures a photo of each child is shared to celebrate the occasion.

Moreover, Zara Tindall, who recently gave birth to her first son Lucas Tindall, decided not to show his face in public out of respect for his older cousin, Princess Charlotte.

Charlotte’s birthday was on the same day that Lucas was first seen in public.

Despite royal birth and pregnancy announcements being part of modern tradition, it has not always been a gesture that parents in the Firm are always comfortable with.

Christopher Warwick, author and biographer for Princess Margaret, had a conversation with the late royal about her parent the Queen Mother and her succession into role of Queen consort.

In the 2020 Netflix documentary ‘Elizabeth & Margaret: Love and Loyalty’, Mr Warwick said: “This little girl [Queen Elizabeth II] would grab everyone’s attention everywhere she goes that even her own mother said, ‘It frightens me that everybody loves her so much.’

“Elizabeth was much more shy but very much assured of herself. Now on the other hand when it came to Princess Margaret, Bertie [her father George VI] could not quite believe he produced this little bundle of joy that would come into the dining room, hugging him, kissing him.”

Members of the Firm live most of their lives in front of global audiences and from the moment of their birth they are introduced to the public by way of a royal announcement, a photo-call outside of the Lindo Wing or more recently through social media.

Moreover, ex-royals Harry and Meghan Markle broke royal protocol when they decided against using the Lindo Wing to introduce baby Archie.

Instead they opted to use one photographer and a much quieter setting within the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In the Channel 5 documentary ‘Secrets of the Royals: Royal Traditions’, royal photographer Kent Gavin was asked about Meghan’s reasons behind breaking protocol.

Mr Gavin explained: “Meghan did not want it [photocall] at all.

“She was totally against it – she changed the rule book totally.

“I do not know if she did it to break tradition… perhaps she did not want that frenzy.”
