Piers Morgan described the Queen “as a woman of great empathy and humanity”, saying the monarch would be very concerned at how the coronavirus crisis is causing suffering for many Britons and people around the globe.

The outspoken GMB host told this website: “On coronavirus I think she will be very concerned about what is happening.

“She is a woman of great empathy and humanity and I think she will find it very distressing to see so many people in the country suffering and that the pandemic has caused huge suffering in so many different ways.”

The journalist was also full of praise for the Queen in his new book, Wake Up.

Commenting on her April broadcast during the peak of the UK’s first wave of coronavirus, Mr Morgan said: “This was her most important address, one that came when every single person in Britain has been profoundly affected by a deadly virus that is destroying lives as fast as it is destroying jobs and economies.

“And in just five short minutes, Her Majesty gave the greatest speech of her life.

“It was eloquent, powerful, evocative and perfectly pitched – thanking health workers for risking their lives to save ours, and the public for (largely) obeying Government lockdown rules, but also urging all of us to dig deep into our individual reservoirs of stoic strength to get us collectively through this endurance test.”

Mr Morgan then praised the Queen for concluding the speech with a rallying cry.

She said: “We should take comfort that while we have more still to endure, better days will return.

“We will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.”

Commenting on this, he said: “I felt a tear in my eye well up when I heard those words, and I’m sure I wasn’t alone as social media instantly exploded with emotional praise.

“In her own uniquely influential way, the Queen made the British people feel better, lifted our spirits and gave us hope for the future.”

Mr Morgan also praised the Queen and other senior royals for participating in virtual engagements during the crisis.

He said in his book: “Other senior royals back home in Britain, led by the Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla, and the Cambridges, have been doing their duty in a quietly, stoically magnificent way.”

The Queen’s national address broadcast to the nation on Sunday April 5.

It was recorded from Windsor Castle, where the monarch spent much of the coronavirus lockdown self-isolating with her husband, Prince Phillip.

She then spent several weeks in Balmoral, her Scottish estate where she holidays every summer.

The royal couple then spent some time on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where they stayed for several weeks.

On Tuesday October 6, the Queen returned to her royal residence in Windsor, Buckingham Palace confirmed.
