Queen admires how Kate has ‘adapted to Queen-in-waiting role’ – Duchess ‘so dignified’

The BBC’s former royal correspondent Ms Bond said the Queen, 93, has enjoyed the manner of which Kate, 37, has adapted to life as a member of the Royal Family and particularly as a Queen-in-waiting. Ms Bond told ITV’s Lorraine the Queen thinks Kate, mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, has “come into her own” in recent years and that the wife of Prince William is often there working “behind the scenes”. She said the British public are beginning to really “love” Kate’s “quiet dignity”.

Ms Bond said: “She’s doing very well isn’t she? She’s so dignified.

“She has a quiet dignity about her which I think the public is growing to love and she works behind the scenes.”

When asked by stand-in host Christine Lampard if Ms Bond believed Kate as the Queen’s favourite, Ms Bond said: “The Queen is very, very fond of Sophie countess of Wessex – she often takes her place beside the Queen.

“But I think she admires the way that Catherine, as she’s known in royal circles, has adapted to the job being a Queen-in-waiting.”

At Christmas, Kate won more praise from the public for undertaking two days of work experience at a busy maternity ward as part of a secret visit.

She wrote an open letter to midwives praising their work after secretly joining them on visits to people’s homes and in Kingston Hospital’s maternity unit in south-west London.

Her letter marked 2020 as International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Kensington Palace also released four new pictures of her time there in late November.

Kate said in her letter: “During my time at Kingston I accompanied community midwives on their daily rounds and was welcomed in to people’s homes.

“I was truly touched by the trust that people placed in me, sharing their experiences and voicing their fears openly.

“I also spent time in hospital clinics and on post-natal wards. No matter the setting, I was continually struck by the compassion that those of you I spent time with showed and the incredible work ethic you demonstrated on behalf of your entire profession – not only performing your rounds but working tirelessly through the night to support people that were at their most vulnerable.”

Kate, who has made it her long-term mission to help improve early years’ care and give Britain’s children a better start in life, also paid tribute to the vital work of midwives.

She added: “You are there for women at their most vulnerable; you witness strength, pain and unimaginable joy on a daily basis.

“Even before we are born, our mother’s emotional and physical health directly influences our development and by the age of five, a child’s brain has developed to 90 percent of its adult size.

“Your role is therefore of fundamental importance.”

The mother-of-three added: “Although this was not my first encounter with the care and kindness provided by midwives, it gave me a broader insight into the true impact you have on everybody you help.”

Prince William, who married Kate in 2011, is second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles.
