The birth of Lili would have left the late Princess of Wales overjoyed – just as the choice of her names, according to Stewart Pearce, the royal’s former voice coach. He told Us Weekly: “As Diana was the personification of love and the exemplar of unconditional love, she would have been so excited by the baby and her beautiful names.”

A spokesperson of Meghan and Prince Harry announced on Sunday at 5pm the birth of little Lili.

The baby, they said, was safely delivered by the Duchess at a Californian hospital two days prior.

The statement read: “It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

“Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40 am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.

“She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

The statement went on speaking about the baby’s names and the reason behind Meghan and Harry’s choice.

It read: “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.

“Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”

Little Lili already shares a connection with another member of the Royal Family, her cousin Princess Charlotte.

Both children were given at birth the name Diana, in honour of their father’s mother.

Moreover, the full name of the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also pays tribute to the Queen, as it is Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Lili and Charlotte aren’t the only members of the Royal Family to have been named after the Queen – and the Queen Mother, whose name at birth was Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon.

Princess Anne’s full name is Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise while her daughter is called Zara Anne Elizabeth.

Similarly, Princess Beatrice and Lady Louise also include Elizabeth in their full name.

Meghan and Prince Harry also shared a personal message of thanks following the joyous news.

It read: “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.

“She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.

“Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

Meghan and Harry are now on parental leave, as reported on their organisation’s website Archewell.com.

The note left at the end of Lili’s birth announcement read: “While the Duke and Duchess are on parental leave, Archewell will continue to do important work and publish stories on the site.

“We look forward to seeing you!

The couple offers their employees up to 20 weeks off as parental leave – which has led to thinking the Duke and Duchess could take a month-long break from their projects.

Speaking to Good Morning America, royal biographer Omid Scobie said: “We’re so used to seeing senior royals going back to work but Harry and Meghan are leading by example.

“They offer up to 20 weeks parental leave at Archewell.

“It’ll be several months off work for the pair of them.”
