William’s relationship with Charles and brother Prince William has been put back under the microscope, after the Duke of Sussex discussed them during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Harry described how William and Charles were “trapped” within the monarchy, and unable to get out. William and Harry enjoyed an incredible relationship with their mother, Princess Diana – who was married to Charles until their divorce in 1996. The Princess of Wales was known for her kind and gentle nature, which was often demonstrated when she attended public appearances.

Some say this was one of the reasons Prince Charles took a liking to her.

Charles on the other hand, has been known to be awkward, somewhat aloof and a distant father.

William has always had a very close relationship with his in-laws, Carole and Michael Middleton, which has been prominent since the start of his relationship with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

In 2011, royal author Katie Nicholl took a closer look into the Cambridge and Middleton dynamic and had some interesting finds.

In a Vanity Fair column Ms Nicholl wrote: “William adores them. He affectionately calls Kate’s father ‘Mike’ and on occasion ‘Dad,’ even though it is said to prickle Prince Charles.

“Because they do everything together, friends call them the En Masse Middletons.

“They are a close knit family, which is one of the reasons William loves spending time with them and has joined his future in-laws on several trips.”

Moreover Ms Nicholl also stated that Carole actually had some concerns about her daughter’s relationship with William.

When asked about Carole, Ms Nicholl said: “Before Christmas 2009, Carole Middleton had anxiously asked him when he planned to make an honest woman of her daughter.

“After what was at that point a seven-year courtship and two breakups there was still no ring on Kate’s finger, and she was nearly 28.”

When the couple had their first son Prince George, the Middletons and Prince Charles went through a ‘power struggle’ because the Prince of Wales felt that Carole had too much control over their grandson.

Diana also had reservations about Charles’ parenting.

She was mortified when her then husband allowed an 11-year-old William to kill a rabbit.

Eventually, Charles and Diana separated in 1992, and divorced four years later.

However, in the years leading up to the divorce Diana believed that Prince Charles and the Queen were planning to separate her from Harry and William.

This was mainly down to the fact that there had never been a heir divorce at the time of there separation, and the Princess of Wales became fearful of how the divorce would impact her children.
