Prince William: The spy who came in with a cheese sandwich
When the Duke of Cambridge spent a week with the Secret Intelligence Service last month he packed the simple sarnie lovingly made by his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, sources reveal. Warned that some days could be “intensive” with no time for a proper lunch, the prince told senior officials: “That’s no problem as I often have a sandwich at lunchtime if there are no official engagements.” Well-placed sources revealed he was also spotted tucking into fancier smoked mackerel pate sandwiches crafted by Kate. Last week we reported how the Duke spent three weeks with Britain’s security services – MI5, MI6 and GCHQ – after asking to see the challenges they face. MI5 deployed him on surveillance on the streets of Britain. And it has now emerged he took part in a two-hour “role play” with MI6 in which five officers re-enacted a real scenario from several years ago where the need for cover was “made apparent”. William is said to have relished playing his “small but key” part while at MI6’sVauxhall Cross HQ.
The 36-year-old, who had intelligence training in the RAF, made his interest in unfolding situations “keenly felt”, sources said.
MI6 that week was following rapidly changing events in Libya.
The royal was given access to live satellite imagery of an “unfolding situation”, as forces led by rogue General Khalifa Haftar consolidated their hold on oil fields before advancing on Tripoli.
That offensive, opposed by the UN and Nato, has now led to 75 deaths and forced thousands to flee the North African nation’s capital.
He also attended a briefing about urgently replacing an officer pulled out of South America.
But instead of Bond-style gadgets like a fountain-pen gun, he was shown a £1,000 armoured briefcase strong enough to withstand a Semtex explosion.
When William ate in the MI6 canteen he met as many officers as he could, telling them “just call me Will”.
“Overall, he showed himself to be deeply engaged and we hope he got what he wanted from his time with us.We certainly enjoyed having him here,” said a source.
