Meghan Markle and Prince Harry: How the royal power duo channel Princess Diana’s spirit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will soon be welcoming their first child to the world. But ahead of the royal baby’s arrival, the pair launched an Instagram account to share their charitable work far and wide. The Sussex Royal Instagram account has gained 4.5 million follows in its first week. And while royal fans are secretly hoping Harry and Meghan will post pictures of their baby there after the birth, so far it’s a portfolio of all the worthy work they do.

And while royal fans are secretly hoping Harry and Meghan will post pictures of their baby there after the birth, so far it’s a portfolio of all the worthy work they do.

A baby charity, a South African food bank, and a London youth club are just some of the causes that Meghan and Harry have got behind.

Their use of social media to promote the organisations they support is a canny move, that shows they keen to breath new life into the royal family’s image.

Harry has also announced this week that he will be collaborating with Oprah Winfrey to create a series that addresses mental health issues.

On the surface the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are every bit the perfect royal pair, while underneath they are fearless activists just like Harry’s mum, Princess Diana.

Princess Diana famously championed a campaign for a worldwide ban on landmines.

She also raised awareness around HIV and homelessness and was always ready to be photographed meeting the people she helped.

According to Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, Harry and Meghan intend to channel their royal status in the same way.

Mr Fitzwilliams told the “Harry and Meghan aim to be a dynamic powerful duo for the Commonwealth and internationally with Diana as their inspiration.

“They’ve chosen a variety of causes with Harry it’s the wounded veterans and those suffering with mental illness and with Meghan, it’s diversity, female empowerment and gender equality and I suspect for her, LGBT rights as well.

“We’ve only seen four patronages that Meghan has taken up but if one looks at the Instagram, this is obviously very significant because they’ve got 4.4 million followers already.

“What they are doing is following in Diana’s footsteps, it is very much inspired by Diana, taking in causes that they feel especially strongly about.”

Mr Fitzwilliams hinted Meghan would not have married Harry if it meant losing her freedom to do charitable work.

He said: “They have more room to breathe than Prince William and Kate do – I think it would be difficult to make it work for them otherwise.

“If you take Meghan’s background, she’s tremendously independent and had to fight to get where she did in her profession. There’s no question at all that she won’t continue to be that way.”

While Meghan’s former acting career made her well-prepared for royal life, social media means she may have less privacy than previous royals.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “There’s the goldfish bowl effect created by social media, and the royal goldfish bowl is all-consuming.

“When there wasn’t social media, the royals had far more privacy. You certainly didn’t have Twitter accounts or trolls, which is a very upsetting thing to deal with.

“Harry is fiercely protective of Meghan and of course they both chose to move to Frogmore Cottage specifically for the privacy they would get to bring up children there.

“But it’s a different era and you have very upsetting trolling.”

Harry and Meghan announced they would be keeping the details surrounding their baby’s birth private this week.

A statement from the royal household read: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby.

“Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private.

“The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”
