Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and William are parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. But the royal children will never get to meet their grandmother, Princess Diana, as she died tragically in a car accident in 1997.

If Princess Diana had the chance to meet her three grandchildren, Prince William has said he knows exactly what type of grandmother she would have been.

The Duke of Cambridge spoke about his late mother prior to the birth of Prince Louis.

In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince William said: “She’d be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare.

“She’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare.

“She’d come, probably at bath time, cause an amazing scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave.”

But after joking, he did admit that Princess Diana would certainly “have been a lovely grandmother”.

In the documentary, Prince William revealed how he and the Duchess of Cambridge make sure they keep Princess Diana’s memory alive.

The royal couple try to talk to their children about their late grandmother.

The Cambridges have photos of “Granny Diana” around their family home.

Prince William said: “It’s important they know who she was and that she existed.

“I think, constantly talking about Granny Diana, so we’ve got more photos up round the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff.”

He added how the Duchess and himself often tell their children stories about Princess Diana.

He said: “It’s hard because obviously, Catherine didn’t know her, she cannot really provide that level of detail.

“I want to make as much time and effort with [them] as I can because I realise these early years particularly are crucial for children, having seen what she did for us.”

Prince William has also previously spoken about how fatherhood brought back painful emotions of his mother’s death.

He told a BBC documentary on mental health that feelings from a “traumatic” event can resurface when becoming a parent.

Prince William explained that he has found things “overwhelming” at times.

He said: “Having children is the biggest life-changing moment, it really is.

“And I agree with you, I think when you’ve been through something traumatic in life – and that is like you say your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger – your emotions come back in leaps and bounds because it’s a very different phase of life.

“And there’s no one there to, kind of, help you, and I definitely found it very, at times, overwhelming.”

The Duke added how emotions can “come out of the blue” which you may think you have already dealt with or do not expect.

He added: “It’s one of the most amazing moments of life but it’s also one of the scariest.”
