Influential royal commentator Amanda Platell spoke about the Duke of Edinburgh after he passed away aged 99 at Windsor Castle yesterday. His death comes shortly after he left hospital where he spent several weeks being treated earlier this year.
Writing in her Daily Mail column, Ms Platell compares the duke’s selfless actions supporting his wife 73 years unquestionably with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
She touched on their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview last month during which they accused the Royal Family of racism.
Following the interview, in a statement from Buckingham Palace, the monarch said she found their assertions “concerning” but insisted that “recollections may vary”.
Nevertheless, the uproar caused by Meghan and Harry stepping back as senior royals has cast a “long shadow” on the final year of Prince Philip’s life, the expert claimed.
Writing in her Daily Mail column, she said: “In stark contrast to Harry and Meghan, Philip always put honour and duty before his own pride and sometimes restless spirit.
“He wasn’t just the Queen’s ‘strength and stay all these years’, as she told us on their golden anniversary, he was the nation’s.
“The rift between Harry and Meghan and the Royal Family had cast a long shadow over Philip’s final year.”
The columnist went on to express her hope that the prince’s death could prompt the strained royals to “reunite” and reconcile their differences.
