Prince Philip: Queen will 'keep calm and carry on' says expert

Dr Anna Whitelock from Royal Holloway University appeared on ITV to discuss what moves the Royal Family will now make and how they would change following the death of Prince Philip. Dr Whitelock predicted that the Duke of Edinburgh’s death signalled the end of a chapter and the start of a new one and questioned if the Queen would follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria when her husband died and become more withdrawn from public life. The academic added she could see the Queen delivering a statement soon after the funeral where she speaks about the loved ones that everyone has lost this past year. 

Speaking on ITV, Dr Whitelock was asked “now what” for the Royal Family.

She replied: “That’s a big question, we’re at the end of a long chapter of continuity and we’re about to begin a new chapter of unknown length. 

“For now in the short term, the Royal Family will be regrouping around the Queen who is now a widow at Windsor. 

“Of course that echoes back to Queen Victoria who was given that unkind [name] when she withdrew for many months after the death of Albert. 

“In the short term, I think the Queen will keep calm and carry on and she will do what she does best which is to serve and put her duty before everything else. 

“But I think she, whether it’s in the next few days or longer, put out some kind of broadcast. 

“I think she will be keen to point out that she like many thousands of people have lost someone this year.”

Many broadcasters have thrown out their regular shows to focus on Prince Philip’s death. 

Prince Philip: Sophie Wessex praises the Queen

Prince Philip passed away aged 99 on April 9 and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

Gun batteries located across the UK and at sea fired 41 rounds – one every minute- from midday on April 10 to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s death.

Philip’s son, The Earl of Wessex, was seen driving into Windsor Castle at around midday on Saturday and left an hour later with his wife Sophie.

The Countess of Wessex spoke to reporters as she left and told them “the Queen has been amazing.”

The Royal Family shared on their social media accounts an image of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The photo was accompanied by a quote from the Queen in 1997.

It read: “He (Philip) has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.”
