The Royal Family was mocked by Mr Ross over how they behaved during trips overseas to represent the UK. The cost for their travels, which only included royal duties not private travel, was reported to be £4.6million for the 2018-19 fiscal year. While BBC star Mr Ross praised the monarchy for their work, he argued that they should not be “allowed to go abroad”.

The TV star admitted that he “loved” the “link with tradition” through the Royal Family and felt they did “a lot of good for the country” before launching into a rant.

He claimed that “every time” they went abroad “it was a disaster” because they made other nations “think we are ridiculous”.

Mr Ross continued: “They are supposed to be embassies of good will, they are meant to be our ambassadors.

“I thought they would go away so that people have good positive thoughts about us but no, every time they go away… people will just think we’re ridiculous.

“It’s like you have Prince Philip who goes and seems to have some very advanced form of royal Tourette’s syndrome.”

Mr Ross continued to take further swipes at the Duke of Edinburgh’s behaviour abroad.

The star said: “He’ll be in the line seeing some people, say China for example, and he will say ‘Hello and what do you do slant eyes?’ He’ll say something like that. He will think that’s ok.”

Laughter erupted from the audience, where Mr Ross pitched for the Royal Family’s travels abroad to be put into Room 101 in 2000.

Prince Philip is well-known for his exceptionally dry humour, which has occasionally landed him in hot water in the past.

In 1961, he told the Scottish Women’s Institute that “British women can’t cook” and referred to some Russians as “the b******s who murdered half my family” six years later.

In another gaffe, he jokingly asked a Scottish driving instructor how he kept “natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?” in 1995.

Mr Ross also poked fun at Prince Charles for wearing traditional and sometimes deliberately comical “hats” given to him during overseas trips.

He continued: “I’m beginning to suspect that the people who give him those hats know exactly what they are doing… it’s their way of getting back at us.”

TV show host Paul Merton interjected that he reckoned they had “sweepstakes” on whether he would wear the accessories handed to him.

The segment concluded with royal overseas tours being put in Room 101 after Mr Merton concluded: “It does make us look completely ridiculous!”
