Prince Harry and Meghan Markle face ‘catastrophic’ scenario if they lose titles
Scobie refuses to apologise for names appearing in book
An entertainment expert has warned of the “catastrophic” consequences for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex if they lose their royal titles.
The latest discussions over whether they could lose their titles follows two senior royals being named in a Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s latest royal biography, Endgame.
The issue of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s titles has been a sore point for many royal watchers ever since they stepped down from their roles in 2020 and distanced themselves from the family.
Entertainment expert Mark Boardman, CEO of MarkMeets, has said stripping the duo of their Duke and Duchess titles could result in the loss of “income, position, and power” for both Harry and Meghan.
“The financial impact of losing royal titles for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be catastrophic for the Sussexes and an irreversible, significant turning point resulting in potentially huge consequences,” Boardman told Express.co.uk.
“This includes the loss of income, position, and power, and even a loss of access to their primary income sources, including commercial deals, specifically, their partnership with Netflix, which is tied to their personal brand and public image.”
Outside of their financial lives, the royal pair could also struggle with their relationship as such a move would damage their “personal brand and public image” – although he notes this would be less severe for Meghan.
“Public reactions to the loss of titles may vary by country, with the most significant effects seen in the UK and the US with regards to the impact on their standing would be significant,” Boardman said.
“While some may view it positively as a move towards independence, others may see it negatively as a departure from tradition.

“Meghan Markle’s popularity in the US is more likely influenced by factors beyond royal titles, such as her individual achievements and personal qualities, but the royal family turmoil would make headlines leading to a decline in popularity which could take years to recover from.”
Speculations about whether the Sussex titles could be removed from the King’s son and his wife come after two senior royals were named in the Dutch translation of Endgame, which was released at the end of November.
The pro-Sussex biography was pulled from shelves in the Netherlands shortly after the mistake was realised.
The naming of the two royals did not appear in the English version nor any other translation on sale.

Scobie has denied ever including the names in any copy of the book.
“I never submitted a book that had those names in it,” he said in an interview on ITV’s This Morning on November 30, 2023.
Speaking with Oprah Winfrey in the tell-all interview released in 2021, Meghan declined to name who it was that made the comments.
“I think that would be very damaging to them,” Meghan said at the time.
Prince Harry added: “That conversation, I am never going to share. At the time it was awkward, I was a bit shocked.”
