Princess Kate’s simple Christmas breakfast versus Prince William’s crazy blowout

Christmas Day in the royal household may seem like the perfect excuse for the family to embrace decadence and eat their fill of delicious food, however that is not the case for all of them.

A former royal chef has revealed that even during the biggest celebration of the year Princess Kate still likes to stick to a highly nutritious diet. She prefers to munch on fruit and toast for a light breakfast, while Prince William on the other hand joins the men in having a hearty English fry up.

According to chef Darren McGrady the royal men and women split up for their breakfast on Christmas Day, with the ladies having it taken to their rooms. He told The Daily Mail: “On Christmas Day, the ladies generally opt for a light breakfast of sliced fruit, half a grapefruit, toast and coffee delivered to their rooms.”

But the men meet downstairs to eat their much heartier breakfast, usually including eggs, bacon, mushrooms, kippers and grilled kidneys together.

Mr McGrady also claimed that the main Christmas lunch for the Firm at Sandringham is actually quite traditional, with very few extravagances. He explained: “It was the same meal every year. They’re actually boring when it comes to festivities. They didn’t do hams or anything, just traditional turkeys.”

He said: “We did three turkeys for the Queen and her family in the royal dining room, one for the children’s nursery and then more for the 100 or so staff, so everyone had a Christmas lunch.”

The chef continued: “The turkey is served with mashed and roast potatoes, chestnut or sage and onion stuffing, cranberry sauce and bread sauce. Vegetables include brussels sprouts, carrots and roast parsnips.”

The Christmas pudding meanwhile is homemade and is “decorated in holly, doused in brandy, and the palace steward would carry it, flaming, into the royal dining room”.

Earlier this week Queen Camilla kicked off this year’s Christmas celebrations at Clarence House by inviting terminally ill children to the house to help decorate the tree.

She put on a festive feast for their children, families and hospice staff, and they even got the chance to meet Father Christmas and two of his reindeer.

It will be a family affair for Camilla at Sandringham this Christmas, as her own children and grandchildren from her first marriage will be joining in the festivities.
