Prince Charles suggests patients recovering from Covid should try yoga for ‘healing’

The Prince of Wales spoke to the virtual yoga and healthcare symposium Wellness After Covid on Friday. In a video statement, Charles explained how doctors should work together with “complementary healthcare specialists” to “build a roadmap to hope and healing” after the pandemic.

He added: “This pandemic has emphasised the importance of preparedness, resilience and the need for an approach which addresses the health and welfare of the whole person as part of society, and which does not merely focus on the symptoms alone.

“As part of that approach, therapeutic, evidenced-informed yoga can contribute to health and healing.

“By its very nature, yoga is an accessible practice which provides practitioners with ways to manage stress, build resilience and promote healing.”

Charles described those who attended the symposium as having a shared ambition “to help those for whom the mental anguish and physical challenges of long Covid have been devastating”.

He continued: “When we work together with a common interest we can build on each other’s ideas and, perhaps, build a roadmap to hope and healing.”

The event was co-organised by the Yoga In Healthcare Alliance and the Give Back Yoga Foundation.

Charles also spoke about his own experience of being infected with COVID-19.

He said: “I seem to have got away with it quite lightly … unfortunately, that is not the case for millions of people in the UK and across the globe.”

The Prince of Wales has previously hailed the benefits of practising yoga.

In 2019, Charles said yoga had “proven beneficial effects on both body and mind” and provided “tremendous social benefits” that help create “discipline, self-reliance and self-care”.

Charles’ wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has said she likes to practice yoga as it “makes you less stiff”.

In 2018, Camilla revealed: “I do a bit of yoga. A bit of yoga and a bit of Pilates. It’s very good for you as you get older, it makes you less stiff – good for your muscles.

“It makes you much more supple. I think it’s very important as you get older to take exercise and stretch.”
