The President of France was visibly impressed by the Prince of Wales’ linguistic skills. President Macron bestowed the ‘Legion D’honneur’ on England’s capital city in recognition of London’s wartime role.

Prince Charles said in French: “Thank you for generously bestowing this high distinction to London.

“It is with immense pride and great pleasure that I accept this Legion D’honneur on behalf of London, the United Kingdom and all those who fought for freedom next to France.

The Prince of Wales added in English: “Time and again our countries have stood together against tyranny and oppression, joining arms to defend the values we hold most dear.

“Throughout my life and my 34 official visits to France, I have sort to lend my support to the relationship between our two countries and to champion the ties that bind us together.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to discuss the global fight against the novel coronavirus and Britain’s future relationship with the European Union at talks later on Thursday.

“President Macron is visiting London to mark an important event in the shared history of our two countries and to commemorate the sacrifices made during the Second World War,” Johnson’s spokesman told reporters.

“But it is also an opportunity for the PM and the president to discuss a range of other issues and I expect them to talk about the global fight against coronavirus and also for our future relationship with the European Union to come up.”

Mr Macron’s arrival in London was announced earlier this morning by the French Embassy in the UK, which shared a picture of his aircraft landed at RAF Northolt.

Sharing a picture of the president’s aeroplane on the ground, the Embassy wrote on Twitter: “President @EmmanuelMacron arrives in London to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Charles De Gaulle’s Appeal. #18JuinUK”

This meeting marks the first official audience carried out face-to-face by members of the Royal Family since mid-March, a few days before the Government issued new guidelines on coronavirus.
