Pensioner with four holidays booked refuses to quarantine after any of them

A British pensioner who has four holidays booked has insisted she will not be quarantining after any of them – despite the risk of infecting vulnerable people with coronavirus.

All travellers must now self-isolate for 14 days after arriving back in the UK unless they are returning from an exempt country.

However, a woman named Jennifer has insisted she will not follow the rules as ‘the risk of Covid-19 had been exaggerated by the government’.

Jennifer told LBC host James O’Brien she had ‘so many cruises cancelled, she’d soon have to buy her own cruise ship’ in a segment on the radio show this morning.

She said: ‘I’ve got Spain booked. In October, I have got Morocco booked. In November, I have got another [trip to] Spain booked.

‘In December for Christmas I have got a cruise. I’ll be honest, my husband has even booked Greenland for 2022.’

After joking that the keen holidaymaker was ‘single-handedly reviving the UK economy’, James asked if she would be quarantining afterwards if restrictions were in place for the countries she was visiting.

She responded with a resounding ‘no’, forcing James to warn he would have to tip the police off about her behaviour.

As his guest caller protested, he asked: ‘What do you think the quarantine is for Jennifer? Why do you think it’s there? I’m going to insist you answer the question.’

Exemplifying she knew the purpose of quarantine, she replied saying it was to ‘protect people from Covid-19’, but added: ‘It could be swine flu, it could be anything’.

In an effort to get his point across, James then probed further, asking: ‘How many people have died of Covid-19?’

She said: ‘You know the deaths of people from Covid-19? Two of my friends have died of cancer and one of a heart condition, and on their death certificates, it said “Covid related”.

‘That’s just three people I know. They didn’t have Covid, they weren’t even tested.’

As the conversation went on, James eventually lost his patience with the pensioner, telling her it ‘wasn’t funny anymore’.

He said: ‘This is really irresponsible, please take more care of yourself and your husband. Even if you don’t care about anybody else, other people care about you.

‘The rules are there for a reason. The quarantine is there for a reason. You’re retired, you don’t even need to go to work. It would be easy to quarantine.

‘This isn’t funny, this isn’t another radio phone-in topic where someone comes on a bit contrary and we all have a bit of a laugh and a bit of a ding-dong.

‘It’s just really stupid. And profoundly dangerous. Please, please have a little think.’

It comes after France, Aruba, Malta, the Netherlands, Monaco and Turks and Caicos Islands were added to the government’s quarantine list last week.

Heathrow Airport has revealed the development of a new coronavirus testing facility which could allow passengers to skip the mandatory 14-day isolation period after returning from certain countries.
