Nick Ferrari blasts German MEP over Brexit demands – ‘We’re not going to build a wall!’

Speaking on his LBC show, Nick Ferrari asked the German MEP whether he believed Boris Johnson’s promises to present alternative solutions to the Irish backstop could solve the Brexit impasse reached after more than three years of negotiations. As Mr McAllister repeatedly pointed out the Irish backstop is crucial insurance against the return of a hard border on the island, the radio host asked: “When the British Prime Minister talks about cameras, monitoring, almost bonded warehouses and trusted trader schemes, might that be enough?”

Mr McAllister replied: “The backstop is an insurance if no other solutions are possible.

“But one thing is very, very clear. Under all circumstances, we have to prevent any kind of hard border on the island of Ireland.

“And on the other hand, as the European Union, we need to preserve the integrity of the single market.

“This also in all circumstances but in respect of our future relationship between the EU and the UK.”

But Boris Johnson is saying the United Kingdom doesn’t want a hard border in Ireland either

But Mr Ferrari blasted: “But Boris Johnson is saying the United Kingdom doesn’t want a hard border in Ireland either.

“So, we’re not going to build one. Are you?

“That’s what he would say.”

Once again, the German MEP pointed out it was the British people who decided to leave the EU and it was now up to the UK Government to come up with solutions.

He said: “The United Kingdom has decided to leave the European Union, the single market and the customs union.

“Now it’s up to the UK Government to present alternatives to the backstop which are feasible in practice.

“And as long as we haven’t found them, the backstop is the reassurance.”

It comes as the British Prime Minister met with both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week, in an attempt to find a solution to the Irish border in the EU Withdrawal Agreement.

Both EU leaders agreed to give Mr Johnson time to find an alternative to the Irish backstop, granting him 30 days to find a solution.

Leaders from the seven G7 member states, as well as representatives of the European Union, will meet in the French coastal city of Biarritz on August 24 to 26 to attend the 45th G7 summit.

Mr Johnson will attend the summit for the first time and will have to re-face political heavyweights Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron.

Mr Johnson will likely urge the EU to reconsider its Brexit stance at this week’s G7 summit and will urge Mrs Merkel to put pressure on European Council President Donald Tusk.
