Meghan Markle flew to New York and back in ONE DAY with baby Archie to watch US Open final

Sporting legend Serena Williams has revealed Meghan Markle secretly travelled to New York in September with her then four-month-old son baby Archie to watch her play in the final of the US Open. It was Meghan’s first solo trip across the pond with her son to cheer on her close pal, as she took on Canadian star Bianca Andreescu. The 23-time major tennis champion also revealed that Meghan, who she described as “the strongest person” she knows, flew back to London later that day.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, Williams said: “I just really think she’s the strongest, literally the strongest person I know and the nicest, sweetest.

“She flew all the way with a newborn to see me play in New York and flew all the way back that night, and I probably couldn’t have done that.

“It kinda goes to show you what an amazing person that she is and that’s just one of the many things that she does for me.”

It was initially thought that Meghan had travelled Stateside alone, leaving baby Archie at home with Prince Harry having been pictured at the final, where Williams lost to the 19-year-old Canadian 2 sets to nil.

At the time, Meghan and Harry were facing criticism for catching four private jets in under two weeks.

But a spokesman for the Duchess of Sussex confirmed Meghan’s flight to New York was a commercial flight, not using a private jet.

Meghan flew from London Heathrow with her son on a commercial flight that left at approximately 9am, and arrived in New York just after 12pm.

The Duchess also reportedly stayed in a private residence, rather than opting for a swanky suite she had used when visiting New York in February for her baby shower, which was co-hosted by Williams.

A royal insider claimed Meghan made every effort to ensure the whirlwind trip was kept low-key.

The source told celebrity news site Page Six: “After all the big fanfare of her trip for her two-day baby shower, where paparazzi followed her every move and staked out The Mark Hotel to catch Meghan, her famous friends and the array of gifts arriving, it seems Meghan has learned her lesson.

“She was in New York to support Serena, and catch up with a few other old friends, but was determined to keep everything very low-key and as under-the- radar as possible.”

During the interview, Williams also spoke of her friendship with the Duchess and said Meghan was “always” there for her.

She said: “I call her, text her anytime, crying, she’s always there.

“It doesn’t matter what she’s going through, she sets time aside and that’s amazing.”

Speaking of the pressure Meghan faces being in the royal family, Williams said she couldn’t imagine the level of scrutiny her friend has to deal with.

She said: “I’m not sure that many people can relate on that level, I don’t think I can.”

Meghan and Williams first became friends after meeting at a Super Bowl party in 2010.

Describing their first meeting on her former blog The Tig, Meghan wrote: “Taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing and chatting not about tennis or acting but about good old fashioned girly stuff.”

The Duchess also described how the pair “hit it off immediately” and from then on have continued to support each other through their chosen charity work and business ventures.
