Meghan Markle defended by TV star – ’She’s not a prop who will be silenced!’

Meghan has been praised for standing her ground against “bullies” and being ready to pursue the causes close to her heart by Ms Jamil, one of the stars in Netflix TV show The Good Place. The actress, one of the 15 women who appeared on the cover of the September issue of Vogue co-edited by Meghan, claimed critics are “trying to silence” the Duchess of Sussex, who has been pursuing with full force causes she cares about such as female empowerment and gender equality.

Speaking from the red carpet at the 2019 Girl Up #GirlHero Awards in Beverly Hills, Ms Jamil said: “People push back against women and try to make them afraid of speaking out, because they are afraid of our power.

“They have seen with #MeToo and #TimesUp how quickly, when we mobilise and when we join forces, how quickly we can make change.”

It comes after Meghan and Harry launched a legal challenge against the Mail on Sunday over the publishing of a private letter from the Duchess to her father.

Ms Jamil said: “I think the press in England is terrified and that’s why they’re trying to silence her but she stands against bullies.

“And standing up to bullies is really the only way you can put them in their place.

“Anyone who piles on to that woman, especially when she was pregnant, which is what we really saw, that was when it really started; which is a really dangerous time for someone to be that stressed.”

The actress also spoke of how knowledgeable and committed the Duchess of Sussex is.

Recalling her collaboration with Meghan at the Forces for Change Vogue issue, Ms Jamil said: “She is the real deal. She really knows what she is talking about.

“She has been a gender equality activist since she was about eight.

“She knows everything about all the women on those pages.

“She called each of us and gave us a detailed account about how long she has been investing in our work, and so she is not just a prop for the Royal Family.”

Ms Jamil’s defence of Meghan comes after the ITV documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, aired on Sunday.

There, Meghan opened up on her struggles to cope with being a new mother under the media scrutiny – and how she feels she isn’t thriving but merely surviving.

She told broadcaster Tom Bradby: “I’ve said for a long time to H – that’s what I call him – it is not enough to just survive something, right?

“That’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive.
“You’ve got to feel happy and I think I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried.”

Mr Bradby, who followed the Sussexes during their 10-day tour to Africa between September and October, asked Meghan about the “impact on your physical and mental health of all the pressure that you clearly feel under”.

The Duchess of Sussex said: “I would say…look any woman, especially when they are pregnant, you are really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging.

“And then when you have a newborn, you know?

“And especially as a woman it’s really, it’s really a lot.”
