Horror monkey lab accused of moving animals 140km away during investigation

A horror lab where animal activists discovered monkeys screaming in pain as they were strapped in metal harnesses has been accused of moving the harmed creatures 140km during an investigation.

The German laboratory in Mienenbuttel in Neu Wulmstorf, Lower Saxony was covered in a global storm last week after graphic footage of it's nightmare facilities was leaked by animal activists.

Following a joint investigation by Soko Tierschutz and Cruelty-Free International, the graphic footage was obtained as part of an undercover worker getting a job at the lab.

Authorities then conducted a spot check of the LPT (Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology) facility and confirmed the allegations made by the animal activists.

The footage – which has been described as some of the "worst abuse ever seen" – showed a monkey vomiting during a laboratory toxicity test as it was held in place by a metal hook.

A beagle was filmed in a cage, while a puddle of seemingly luminous urine surrounds it.

In another clip, the visibly distressed monkeys were seen repeatedly somersaulting, walking in circles or bashing themselves on either side of the cages they were in.

The Green Party in Germany has claimed the creatures are being moved from Mienenbuettel to another lab used by the company some 140km away in Ploen during the investigation.

Green Party politician Christiane Blomeke, said: "Animal activists have reported to us that dogs and monkeys have been transported elsewhere."

While the authorities are not aware of the animals being moved locations, a spokesman said: "In theory, the animals can be moved without any specific ruling."

But the authorities are said to be alarmed at the accusations.

The spokesman added: "LPT must now inform us in advance if they plan to kill animals, this should prevent animals being killed in large numbers and cover-ups of the animals being killed.

"LPT also has to inform us if an animal leaves the LPT lab."

Thousands of protesters have since taken to the streets to protest against the animal lab.

The local regulation authority Laves – the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety has filed charges with the Public Prosecutor in Luneburg for alleged violations against animal protection laws.

Minister for Agriculture Barbara Otte-Kinast said: "If these allegations prove to be true, they would have to be punished and quick consequences are to be put in place.

"A possible revocation of the animal testing licence is being checked by Laves," she said.

Further checks will now be carried out to determine the future of the lab which could result in closure.
