Meghan Markle and Prince Harry thought about this different name for Archie

Royal biography Finding Freedom claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex thought about another moniker for their first child. The book’s authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write that Meghan and Harry ”wanted something traditional, a name that was powerful even without a title in front of it”.

A friend of the couple is quoted as saying: “They thought about Archibald for all of one second…

“He was always going to be little Archie.”

Archie was born at London’s Portland Hospital on May 6 2019 at 5.26am weighing 7lb 3oz.

A few days later the Queen’s grandson and the former actress showed him to the world.

Since his arrival, Meghan and Harry have quit royal duties for a new life in the US.

The tot first lived at Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

He then stayed on Vancouver Island while the Sussexes spent time in Canada before they moved to California.

Next, the family-of-three were based at American actor Tyler Perry’s mansion for a while.

And last month it emerged they had bought a property in Santa Barbara for a reported £11million.

Meghan and Harry moved into their new house in July with Archie.

A spokesman for the couple said last month: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year.

“They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbours, as well as for them as a family.”

Meghan and Harry plunged the monarchy into a period of crisis earlier this year when they announced plans to step back as senior royals.

The Queen held an emergency meeting dubbed the Sandringham Summit in the wake of the announcement bringing in Prince Charles, Prince William to discuss the matter with Harry.

They hoped to continue supporting the monarch while becoming financially independent.

But the proposal was rejected over fears it would have led to accusations they were cashing in on their royal status.

It was later announced they would no longer be working members of the Royal Family.

Meghan and Harry officially ended royal duties on March 31.

As they start their new life away from the monarchy, they are launching charitable organisation Archwell – named after their son – after being forced to drop their Sussex Royal brand.

The Sussexes told The Telegraph in April: “Before Sussex Royal, came the idea of ‘Arche’ – the Greek word meaning ‘source of action’.

“We connected to this concept for the charitable organisation we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name.

“To do something of meaning, to do something that matters.

“Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon.

“We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”
