Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stunned the world when they decided they wanted to step down as senior royals at the beginning of the year. Royal commentator Omid Scobie has said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex still have a good relationship with the Queen. While speaking on his Heirpod podcast, Mr Scobie claimed the royal couple had been speaking to the Queen during lockdown.

He added the Queen has reiterated the “door remains open” if the pair would ever consider returning.

He said: “The Queen made it very clear to the couple both personally and as the monarch that the door is always open.

“I think that even goes beyond this 12-month probation period that we are in.

“The Queen will always support them even if it is them in another country as non-working members of the Royal Family.”

Mr Scobie said this revealed the Queen’s current feelings towards the couple.

He said: “I think it is really important as it shows how she feels about the couple.

“It also shows how they feel towards her vice-versa.

“That warmth is there on both sides and we know Harry and Meghan have had conversations with the Queen in lockdown.”

Mr Scobie also noted that over lockdown Harry and William would have had the opportunity to improve their relationship.

He said: “There is nothing that brings families together like concerns over their health of a parent.

“Prince Charles’ coronavirus scare earlier this year was certainly one of the things that put Harry and William in a place of communication that they hadn’t been in for some time.

“I don’t know the extent of that beyond there were talks.

“But it certainly seems that Prince Harry and William have been taking at least one step in the right direction there.”

Mr Scobie’s new book Finding Freedom delves into the difficulties between the two brothers.

The book, in addition to other royal commentators, have remarked that William’s warnings of how quickly the relationship with Meghan was moving played a significant role in the growing distance between the Harry and William. 

Mr Scobie co-wrote Finding Freedom, and Meghan and Harry are said to have not assisted in its making.
