Martin Lewis tops poll on who would make the best prime minister right now

Martin Lewis has topped a list of celebrities most people want to see become prime ministers.

Liz Truss has only been in Number 10 for three weeks, but that has not stopped some voters thinking about who else might make a good leader of the country.

Often regarded as one of most trusted public figures in Britain, the Money Saving Expert founder has spent the last decade advising millions on money matters.

With the cost of living only worsening, he has become a household name and many refer to him as a ‘national hero’.

So, it is not surprising people want the financial guru as a PM.

Mr Lewis was closely followed by national treasures David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Alison Hammond, and Richard Osman in a poll of 2,000 adults.

Others featured further down on the list include Mick Lynch, the secretary-general of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, Dame Judi Dench and footballer Marcus Rashford.

As part of the research, nearly half would happily vote for a celebrity to become PM.

They believe the leader of the country should not only be trustworthy and honest, but also down to earth with a sense of humour.

Meanwhile, a third think they should be compassionate – as well as unbiased (23%) and hardworking (36%).

The poll was commissioned by Channel 4 ahead of tomorrow’s launch of the new show ‘Make Me Prime Minister’, in which contestants will battle it out in a series of political challenges.

Alastair Campbell, who is featured in the new programme, said: ‘The contestants in the show are not the only ones who think politics is in a mess and that they could do the job better than Boris Johnson or Liz Truss.

‘But I think they learned that the job is a lot harder than it looks.

‘Some of them, without doubt, have real political talent and I hope they go into politics.

‘They will also be pleased by the poll findings that people want our PM to have integrity, and be trustworthy and honest. So should we all.’
