Man saved as fire rips through block of flats in south London

Huge plumes of smoke filled the sky over south London last night as 60 firefighters responded to a blaze at a block of flats.

A man was rescued from the ground floor of the building in Sydenham Road, Croydon.

It had been converted into flats from a terraced house, the London Fire Brigade said.

The blaze ripped through half of the first floor and in dramatic photos flames could be seen breaking through the roof as crews sent jets of water towards it.

The fire produced a ‘significant’ amount of smoke which nearby residents said they could smell.

Last night a spokesperson for the brigade said: ‘The fire produced a significant amount of smoke which was very visible in the surrounding area.

‘Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one man from a flat on the ground floor of the building.

‘Firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout the night.’

Firefighters remained on scene overnight after the blaze was brought under control shortly after 1am.

Eight fire crews from Croydon, Norbury, West Norwood, Addington and Beckenham fire stations attended the scene.

Photos posted by engineer Ashwani Kumar just before midnight showed plumes of smoke billowing above some of Croydon’s tallest buildings.

Den Dweller said: ‘I’m in West Croydon and I’ve seen at least 6 fire engines/trucks go past my flat.

‘I can even smell the smoke.’
