Man killed on his way to the shops after being hit by car fleeing police

A young man was killed on his way to the shops after he was hit by a car being chased by police.

Photos taken from the scene in the Outwood area of Wakefield on Tuesday show the crumpled Peugeot 307 involved in the fatal crash lying overturned in the middle of the road.

The force of the impact threw the pedestrian, who is believed to be aged in his 20s, into a nearby garden.

West Yorkshire Police said that a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A spokesman said that a marked traffic car signalled for the Peugeot to stop in East Ardsley at 5.18pm yesterday afternoon.

He added: ‘The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit began.

‘A short time later the Peugeot and a male pedestrian on Leeds Road, Outwood, were in collision.

‘The male pedestrian died as a result at the scene. The driver of the vehicle suffered what are believed to be minor injuries.’

Local residents who witnessed the smash said they thought the car was going as fast as 80mph in the moments leading up to it, MailOnline reported.

A woman thought to be the victim’s mother arrived soon after, telling onlookers he had only popped out to do some shopping.

West Yorkshire Police said the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Forces across the county have been involved in a purge on anti-social driving which plagued local communities during local down. But it is now yet clear whether this accident was linked.

Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting log 1253 of Tuesday, June 9.
