Man, 38, killed himself while waiting for treatment for 'excruciating toothache'
A man took his own life after suffering from an ‘excruciating’ toothache that kept him up at night.
Anthony Hoskins was told that he would have to wait a number of weeks before he could have his wisdom tooth removed on the NHS.
He was found dead in his flat in Thornhill, Southampton, by police officers on April 3.
Mr Hoskin’s heartbroken mother, Shirley, said his condition gradually deteriorated after he first complained of severe tooth pain in January.
In a desperate bid to help him, she began to save money so that he could receive treatment privately, which would cost around £1500.
After he told her that he had had enough, she promised him he would only have to wait only a few more weeks, as she had managed to set aside £900.
Ms Hoskins told the inquest: ‘Anthony was just a normal man who got on with life.
‘He enjoyed playing computer games and had no financial problems. His rent was always paid, along with other utilities, and he would see me weekly.’
Ms Hoskins added: ‘The really sad thing is that it cost me almost the same amount of money to pay for his death that it would have to have private dental treatment.’
After not hearing from her son for a few days, Ms Hoskins called the police, who had to force entry into his top floor flat.
A statement from Dr Gabriella Day, of Burgess Road Surgery, said Mr Hoskins had last visited the practice in August 2018 with a tooth ache complaint.
Pathologist Dr Eleanor Jaynes carried out a post mortem and provided a cause of death as hanging.
