The incident happened shortly after 4pm between junction 32 for Castleford and J32A.

Highways England has confirmed there are tailbacks of up to four miles back to j30 for Rothwell.

Traffic officers are attending the scene, at this stage there are no reports of any injuries.

An image from the scene shared by Highways England, shows the HGV vehicle spread across three driving lanes as well as the hard-shoulder.

The front cab of the lorry can be seen twisted 90 degrees towards the left-hand-side hard-shoulder.

Highways England wrote on Twitter: “M62 eastbound between J32 Castleford Xscape and J32A A1M there has been an accident where an HGV has jack knifed and is blocking 3 lanes.

“TrafficOfficers on scene and recovery requested.”

Motorists are expected to add up to 30 minutes onto their journey heading into evening rush-hour.

The Highways agency added: “Delays of at least 30 minutes additional travel time on approach to and past the scene of the M62 incident.
